The Work of Phil Morrell

Gye W’ani

About

Back in June 2025 I created a piece for the wonderful @chromatopia.edi . The theme was joy, so this piece uses the #adinkra symbol for joy – Gye W’ani. The protagonists – Golden Orioles a joyful bird found in Ghana.

Gye W’ani is an Adinkra symbol that means “enjoy yourself” or “take joy”. Adinkra are symbols from Ghana that represent proverbs, concepts, and philosophical ideals. Used extensively in fabric, logos and pottery, Gye W’ani represents celebration, embodying the feeling of happiness, and embracing the present moment.

The patterns represent the Kente patterns of Ghanaian heritage made by hand-weaving narrow strips of fabrics on a loom.
